Free to be me?

I just wanted to post a little thought that crossed my mind Friday while listening to the christian music station here in the house; I suppose to say "I had a little thought that crossed my mind" would underestimate the trail of thoughts and frusterations this idea actually proposed. Francesca Battistelli's song 'Free To Be Me' began to play and the lyrics made me cringe. I do hope I'm not stepping on anyones toes by putting down her number one hit that has a catchy tune. The lyrics "when I'm on your shoulders I can see, I'm free to be me and you're free to be you..." Hm. Are we? From what I read in scripture, and please don't take me to be a religious, judgemental stuck up, because in all honesty I don't read nearly what I should in His word, it says clearly we are to lose our life to gain HIS life. We must die to flesh so that His spirit can live in us. Also, when I think about Christ's life when He walked the earth I'm not sure I saw Him living in a way that said "Hey guys, i'm free to be me...and you're free to be you..." Is that the vibe you pick up? Our purpose is not to 'live it up' while we're here. Exact opposite, 'Give it up.' Give it up to Him and no dear friend, we are not free to be us, I will not go on to tell you what the Bible says about us. :) We are, though, free to live for Him and in that walk become like Him. In order to be like someone else, we obviously can't be waisting our time 'being us.' :)

With that thought, I'm sure I have no need to tell you how I feel about the 'low self-esteem' topic and the 'tell everyone how good they are and how God loves them just how they are.' :) Seriously, it's time to move from the milk to the meat. You are no good, only Christ in you is good. If you have low self-esteem, count it as joy, you will have less flesh to prune. Christ does love you and wants you to come to Him where you are--but only to walk you away from where you are and to where He is. He does this because of that great love He has for you. He loves you too much to leave u where u are and waist time building your confidence...in yourself. No, that's not God's way. In closing, it's not about us. Only Him. Goodbye to the idea of 'Free to be me', thank goodness.

  1. Wow. This is definitely not a popular opinion these days, but I couldn't agree more. I think so many people these days feel comfort in lyrics like this; makes them feel so good about themselves that God loves them. But, yeah, God doesn't love us so we can "be ourselves". He loves us and gives us His Holy Spirit so that we can be like Him. Now *that* is good news. Most people are perfectly content to just continue being themselves, missing the main idea which is that through Him we can (and must) be absolutely transformed. I've seen enough of myself these past 28 years to know that if God is willing to give me the tools I need to become Christ-like, I'll take that over my flawed self any day.

    Sorry to ramble!

  2. I have had the same frustration with that song. The message is completely wrong. That's what's wrong w/ so many of us, we forget that there's transformation taking place, once we belong to Christ. Just like last weeks sermon, we are being changed from the inside out. Hopefully we're experiencing a dying to self, not a celebration of self. That song really made me grieved the first time I really listened to the lyrics.

  3. Agreed ladies. And I didn't even bring up the line in the chorus where she says "perfection is my enemy..." ouch. :) 'Be ye perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect.' I guess that verse is self explanatory to the perfection debate. :) God's Word defends its-self. Thanks for sharing!!

  4. Goodness.

We have that CD, the Girls LOVE Francesca. I always took it as she was free to be her "wretched" self because of the Freedom in Christ, and that the "perfection" she spoke of, was according to the World's standards.

BUT, I must admit, I've not listened closely...only to Sierra belting the songs out while she does the dishes...I'll be getting those Lyrics out ASAP.

Thank you for the heads up...Momma Mistakes just never end, do they?
